Be Careful What You Promote

Affiliate marketers want to make money online. I get it. Affiliate marketing is actually a fantastic way to make money on the Internet. But, you need to be very careful what you promote.

If you have been around the affiliate marketing scene as much as I have, you know that there are some really crappy products out there. Some products promise the world and deliver – well, crap. Affiliate marketplaces are minefields. There are some really awesome products on WarriorPlus, Clickbank, and the like. But there is a LOT of junk.

Those junk products are a BIG problem, and you should never, ever promote them.

Before you promote any product, please be sure to do your homework.

Don’t promote every random product that comes along.

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, “But, Michael, why should I care as long as I get paid?” If that’s you, smack yourself. But, here’s why you should care from a practical standpoint.

1 – Promoting bad products hurts your reputation

If someone buys a crappy product based on your recommendation and hates it, what do you think he’s going to think about you? If I buy a product from Bob, and then I find that the product doesn’t live up to the hype, how am I going to feel about Bob? Did Bob not know that this product sucks? Why is he promoting this junk?

That’s what your buyers will think of you if you promote junk.

2 – Promoting bad products hurts your customers

I have been the person getting burned by bad products. Maybe you have too. You read a sales page. It looks promising. You buy it. It sucks. Your money has been wasted. Maybe you can get your money back. Maybe not.

When I was first starting out with trying to make money online, I spent money I didn’t have for products I had hoped would help me make money. Every time I bought a crap product, my heart sank a bit more.

Now, it was my fault for spending money I didn’t have. That’s never a good idea.

But I know for a fact that there are people out there who are desperate to find something that will help them. I was one.

Your buyers may be in that situation. Promoting junk products to them only hurts them, and it’s a real jerk move.

3 – Promoting bad products pads the pockets of marketers who should be ashamed.

Product makers who put out junk products should be ridiculed and called out – not paid. By selling their products for them, you’re only fueling their bad practices instead of solving the problem.

4 – Promoting bad products fuels corruption in the industry.

Let’s get real for a minute here. Do you think promoting junk products helps or hurts the Internet marketing industry as a whole?

It certainly doesn’t help.

In fact, I contend that affiliate marketers pushing crap products are part of the problem and are encouraging bad practices that need to be eradicated – and quickly.

Internet marketing is not a bad thing. In fact, many people have found financial freedom by building businesses online. But the industry as a whole needs work.

Product creators and affiliate marketers alike need to learn to appreciate people – not as resources to be exploited – but as real human beings with needs and goals.

The bottom line is this…

Promote whatever crap you want if you want to. But do so with the knowledge that you are hurting yourself, your customers, and the industry as a whole. If you want to make money online with affiliate marketing the right way, please investigate a product before you become an affiliate for it.

Make sure it’s something that should be promoted, and if it isn’t something that should be promoted, skip it!
